The End

The final marks will be in the Neptun soon, the semester is over. Thank you for those who were come to the semester closing event.
Please, come to the department (K273), ask the administration for BoA and bring home all your works (or ask somebody) during the next week (until 16th of June, every weekday approx. 8am-3pm). Maybe you will need them for the next semesters or for the portfolio, and we cannot store them furthermore, as we need the space for the next projects of the next semester. Thanks!

Final submission

Here I try to summarize all the things you have to know about the end of the semester.

Deadlines:
1) Submission: 16th of May (this Friday) until 12:00 a.m. (noon) at the at the Department Residential Building Design's administration (K273).
2) Late submission: 20th of May (next Tuesday) until 12:00 a.m. (noon) at the at the Department Residential Building Design's administration. (K273) If you choose late submission: there are no any grade deduction, but you have to pay some extra fees (I guess approx. 1800 HUF), but I don't know the paying method. (It's not for me.)

What to bring:
All the drawings that are required in the assignment in a folder and the model (in a box.)
Write your name and BoA to all the sheets and folder and model and box!

What will happens:
There are no any presentations. Simply you have to bring all your works and give to the administration. We will see the drawings later. So everything you wanted to say during a presentation you should draw (and write) into your concept sheet(s).

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Next week (22 of April)

We ask you to prepare your project for a digital presentation again. As it is the mid-term presentation, it is compulsory, and we give marks.

WHAT to bring:
- function;
- concept;
(- some inspiration images if it can helps to understand your concept);
- site plan (insert your building into the map)
- photos of the site
- section(s) - as many as need to understand your design;
- floorplans (all different floors!);
- elevations (all different elevations);
- perspective sketches or working models (i.e. 1:500, 1:200, 1:100 - it depends on what fits with your concept);

What kind of DRAWINGS are required:
- tracing paper is enough - or any cheap and comfortable sheet is okay;
- use a simple pencil or pen is enough - use plus color(s) if you prefer/need
- use rulers if you need, or just use tracing paper and your older drawings as a reference
- be on scale (it can be 1:100 or 1:200 or something else, but use a certain scale!)
- write some basic measurements to the drawings. It helps to understand the scale on the screen.

HOW to prepare for the presentation:
Scan or take photos of all your drawings (and if you have a model take photos of that) and
A) Use Prezi, download your presentation, and bring us the .zip file without expanding that.
B) Make a folder and put there all of your images. Rename them to get the right order. Don't make subfolders. Bring us the folder.
C) Use any program what you prefer and bring us only one .pdf file with horizontal sheets which fits for the projector.

HOW to bring the files:
A) Use an external hard drive or a flash memory = pen drive = usb stick...
B) You can present from your own computer if it is necessary (and if you laptop has a VGA port)
C) In emergency you can send the 'one more image' via email, but don't send me whole presentations.

If there are any questions, please, ask. (Via the blog you can ask anonymously also.)

Results - P3

Here are the results of Project3, you've done good jobs.

Booklet

As some of you remember Jani made a nice booklet for his second project.
To use booklet for a project is a really nice way of presentation, and the more experienced ones knows that it's a quite common technique.

So, I advise to all of you that 'copy' Jani and let's start to make your own booklet!

You can collect there all your ideas, smalls and huge ones too, and there can be several concepts, photos, maps or everything what inspires you. Even if you restart your project you not have to restart your booklet! Let us to see how much you worked.

It is not too late now, just start your booklet right now!

Tricks of Seduction

Here is the last assignment. This is individual work again. If there are any questions, ask please!

The site is the same again, the Tabán.
You are free to choose the function (and the materials).
The volume is limited between 200 and 400 m3 including the open but covered areas too.
The little building must include some interior space.

Next week: first presentation
Second week: mid-term presentation (with scores)

Results - Project2

The results of Project2 - Installation are behind the link.

Prosthesis

The third assignment is available (4 pages), if there are any questions, please ask.
As you have to work in groups, here is the list of the groups. For those who haven't been in the studio yesterday, you are the members of the last group, please contact with each other (i.e. through our facebook group) a.s.a.p. as every group have to present next week.

As it is mentioned in the assignment each group have to held short presentations (approx. 5 minutes).
We suggest you to use Prezi for the presentations, but we accept PowerPoint or a Folder of resized (1024x768px) and ordered images (jpg or png).

Prezi is an easy to use online software for presentations. Registration is easy and free for the basic version (which is still enough), and those who have e-mail address provided by their university (the accept a lot of universities) can register for an upgraded version too.
If you use Prezi, download the final version of your presentation and bring the whole zip (do not expand it).

What to bring on Tuesday?

As it is written clearly in the brief of Assignment 2 you have to submit the following:

  • Sheet 1: Site plan and site section (scale= 1:200 or 1:500 depending on your project) and the analysis of the project area. Required drawing elements: terrain, plants, roads, surrounding objects, buildings and your installation. Curves of the terrain can be drawn by polygons if you prefer (or if you need a ruler to draw clean lines). For the analysis: mark all the important elements (what is important for your concept) by colors/ texts/ icons/ small sketches. Introduce your concept by explanatory drawings or a short handwritten text.
  • Sheet 2: plan(s) [=floor plan(s)] of your installation representing the surrounding environment too. The amount of plans depends on your design (For example if your installation has two floors, you have to draw both plans). Scale = 1:50
  • Sheet 3: section(s) and view(s) of your installation representing the surrounding environment too. The amount of views and sections depends on your design. If one view or section is not enough to understand your installation you have to add more sheets. Scale = 1:50
  • Sheet 4: 3-6 photos of your model. The role of the photos is the visualization of your installation, so take care of the right perspective, the background, the composition and the right contrast of the images. You can add a hand drawn layer on your photos if you want (representing the environment, ie. trees, plants or human figures).
  • Model: Scale=1:25. Build your installation with the terrain and the close environment (i.e.: trees/bushes) All dimensions of all elements have to be in the right scale. The environment can be represented in an abstract way.

All parts are compulsory. Missing sheets or models have to be complemented until the date of late submission.

Take care of the correct dimensions of your objects and the clean, precise representation. The layout of the sheets and the style of the drawings has to be uniform and well designed too. Make every element on your sheets (drawings, explanatory texts, sketches, photos, even your name) part of the composition. The sheet size should be the same, fit with your design and no bigger than A3 (297 x 420 mm). If A3 is not enough: use more sheets or fold the bigger ones into smaller pieces.

Don't forget to join to the FB group of the studio!

  2. Small installations - Presentation by Bence and Bence
  3. How to draw for design courses at BME - Small lecture

Second Assignment

You can download the second assignment from here.

For the next lesson:
  • Choose the function [info point OR look-out point OR labyrinth OR park stage]
  • Choose the material kit [wooden lath OR wooden planks OR plywood (or OSB) boards]
  • Choose the place of your installation in the park (show us photos and drawings where you can explain why you've choosen that part of the park)
  • Bring your ideas/concept. you can bring sketches, but I think this project is easier if you build a lot of working models.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. You can ask here even as anonymus, or write us via facebook.

P.S.: Please don't forget to send me the digitalized version of your first assignment to doramathe at gmail dot com, thanks!

Tabán

The site of the next projects is called Tabán. Currently it is a green park close to Erzsébet bridge (the white one), but it was inhabited until the 1930s. As we won't have time to introduce you the site deeply, we suggest to all of you to make a small research to know the area and the history behind it. You can find many things online, here are some links to start:

Maps:
This is what Google Maps called Tabán. But this is what we (the citizens of Budapest) called Tabán, and this is the project site too.
And via this link you can download a map of the project site. Normally this map is for orienteering running (yes, it is a sport) but as it is well detailed, it will be good for your projects too.

Text:
You can read about the history of Tabán on Wikipedia (in English). And there is a nice
Photoarchive with a map. Actually the user interface of the site is not so fresh, but I guess, you can manage to find the infos.

But the best way to know more is to spend time on the site:

Transport:
By Tram18: one stop from Gellért tér/square to the direction of Széll Kálmán tér/square.
By Tram41 or Tram19: one stop from Gellért tér/square to the direction of Batthyány tér/square.
By bike: five minutes from the university along the Danube.
By car: baaaad idea. Parking is expensive there, and even hard to find a free parking place.
On foot: from the University it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk there along the Danube.

18th February

To summarize, next Tuesday there will be 3 important things:

First we meet in the school (at 14:15 at the classroom) where you can leave your drawings and models and then we are going to visit the site of the next 3 assignments together. I mean all the other assignments of the semester. So it's quite important.

It can be a good idea to bring a camera and take photos of the site that you can use later on for the other assignments. You can also take a sketch book and draw quick sketches of anything interesting you see.

After this little tour you are going to show us your super cool presentation of your desk.  Objectively and subjectively. Please don't forget to scan your drawings and bring them along on a flash memory (a.k.a. pendrive). I guess the presentations will last until about 8 pm, so prepare yourself!*

Finally we are going to explain you the second assignment. It won't take too much time.

* Everybody has 3-5 minutes to present their project, and we have about 5-7 minutes to discuss it together. Please prepare a clear presentation of your concept and idea. Take notes of what you want to say if needed. Everyone is welcome to say their opinion about anybody else's project. So be interactive, please.

Schedule

You will find the schedule for this semester here. If you have any questions, leave a comment.

First Assignment

You can read first assignment here, but actually this is not so important, come to the first lesson (this afternoon!) and we will explain you everything about it.
Schedule of the semester coming soon.
